Carlos Silva to DL, Jason Vargas to start for Seattle Mariners on Tuesday in Texas

Carlos Silva to DL, Jason Vargas to start for Seattle Mariners on Tuesday in Texas
May 9, 2009 (The Seattle Times delivered by Newstex ) --

Just got the word that Carlos Silva has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation and stiffness in his right shoulder. Jason Vargas now moves to the rotation in his place and takes Silva's scheduled spot next Tuesday in Arlington, Tex. against the Rangers .

Brandon Morrow comes off the DL today and fills the vacant roster spot.

Silva had stiffness in his shoulder two weeks ago, when he won his only start this season in Anaheim against the Angels. Still, the M's let him go out for two more starts to try to make it work and he couldn't.

This also helps explain why the team had to wait until after last night's game. Had Vargas been forced to work, say, five innings of relief, he likely would not have been ready to start on four days' rest. So, manager Don Wakamatsu left Chris Jakubauskas out there to take a pounding, Miguel Batista picked up some more outs -- gave up runs, too -- then Vargas only had to come in and throw the equivalent of a between-starts "side session". Would have been different had Jakubauskas, say, not made it out of the second inning and Batista been torched by the fourth. Vargas would have had to pick up too many innings by then. That's why no announcment was made until now.

Silva will be eligible to come off the DL on May 22.

This will be the first start for Vargas in the majors since he made two of them in 2007 with the New York Mets. After that season, he had a bone spur removed from his left throwing elbow and missed all of 2008. He made a dozen starts for the Marlins in 2006, and pitched an exhibition game against the Rangers that year.

"There are a few familliar faces in that lineup, so it won't be completely new,'' Vargas said. "I've seen that uniform in the box before.''

Vargas was getting up to 95 pitches in starts for Class AAA Tacoma and figures he can reach that total again.

"I really don't think I've been off that long to affect my pitch count,'' he said. "It might have just given me an extra breather.''
