TAZAWA REJECTS Mariners' OFFER
Japanese pitcher Junichi Tazawa moved a step closer to signing with the Boston Red Sox after rejecting offers from three other major league teams, including the Mariners.
The 22-year-old right-hander contacted the Mariners, Rangers and Braves to reject their offers, Kyodo News agency reported Friday.
Tazawa is expected to hold a news conference early next week to announce his decision.
-Nationals right-hander Tim Redding had surgery to repair a bone in a joint on his left foot Friday and is expected to be ready for the start of spring training.
-John Robert "Red" Murff, the New York Mets scout who discovered Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, died Friday in a Tyler nursing home. He was 87. Murff was inducted into the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989 and the Texas Scouts Association Hall of Fame in 1999.
-The Boston Red Sox hired former major leaguer and Tampa Bay Rays coach Tim Bogar as their new first base coach.

SPAIN LEADS WORLD CUP OF GOLF
Miguel Angel Jimenez and Pablo Larrazabal lifted Spain into a four-shot lead at the World Cup of Golf in Shenzhen, China, shooting a surprising 9-under 63 on Friday in the difficult foursomes (alternate-shot) format. The record in foursomes in the World Cup is 10-under 61 by Argentina in 2005.
Spain is at 17-under 127 through 36 holes. Australia (68) and Germany (69) were in second place behind Spain, which opened on Thursday with a 64 playing the easier four-ball (best-ball) format.
Sweden (67), was five back, and the United States (69) and Ireland (68) were six off the pace.
-Jeong Jang and Candie Kung beat Annika Sorenstam and Angela Stanford 3 and 2 to help Asia split the six opening alternate-shot matches in the Lexus Cup in Singapore, Sorenstam's final LPGA Tour-sanctioned event before she retires.

SKIING CHAMP PLANS TO RACE
Lindsey Vonn expects to race at the Aspen Winternational despite a harrowing spill during practice last week.
This weekend's Winternational, an annual U.S. tour stop for the women's Audi FIS Alpine World Cup, starts Saturday with the giant slalom and concludes Sunday with a slalom race.
Vonn, the downhill and overall World Cup champion last season, won her first World Cup slalom event in Levi, Finland, on Nov. 15. Four days later, during a Super G training run at Colorado's Copper Mountain, Vonn bruised her left knee when she lost a ski and crashed after hitting a bump.
-Jockey Julien Leparoux broke a 23-year-old Churchill Downs record for wins at a Fall Meet previously held by Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day. Leparoux rode home five winners Friday, bringing his total to 59 during the five-week meet that concludes Saturday. Day previously established the Fall Meet mark in 1985 when he rode 55 winners in a 30-day meet.

DRUG TESTING LAX IN 5 SPORTS
Gymnastics, wrestling and volleyball were among five Olympic sports cited by the World Anti-Doping Agency for failing to implement consistent out-of-competition testing programs.
Handball and modern pentathlon were also described as falling short in complying with the World Anti-Doping Code, which was approved in 2003 and sets out drug-testing rules across all sports and countries.
The world volleyball federation said Friday it has since come into compliance.
-Sailing facilities for the 2012 London Olympics were unveiled, making it the first new venue to be completed for the games.
