SEATTLE (AP) - Garrett Olson tried something new Friday night, wearing a titanium-laced necklace for the first time.

He's planning on wearing it again after this outing.

Olson threw eight scoreless innings before running into trouble in the ninth and the Baltimore Orioles scored six early runs off Jarrod Washburn in a 10-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

"I'm sleeping in it," Olson said of the nylon-covered threads intertwined in team colors.

Olson (8-5) was working on an eight-hitter and his first career shutout before the Mariners chased him during a five-run ninth. The left-hander was charged with three runs and 11 hits in a career-best 8 1-3 innings.

Olson, making his 26th career start and first against Seattle, had never gone longer than seven innings before Baltimore's seventh win in eight games against the Mariners.

Olson's effort came after an afternoon trip to a vendor in downtown Seattle that sells the titanium necklaces that have become popular in professional sports. The manufacturer claims it helps improve circulation and reduces stress on muscles.

The 24-year-old Olson may want to refer teammate Aubrey Huff to the store. The designated hitter was on his way from the clubhouse to the dugout when he heard a roar from the crowd, jumped up and banged his head on the cement ceiling.

Huff was left bleeding and bruised, and Luke Scott hit for him in the sixth.

"I've just got such mad hops," the 234-pound Huff joked, adding he's OK and would have stayed in if his team wasn't ahead by nine runs at the time.

Orioles manager Dave Trembley called Olson's titanium-enriched work "free and easy."

Most nights are these days against Seattle, which is an AL-worst 27 games under .500.

Seattle loaded the bases in the ninth on three singles before Trembley brought in Lance Cormier. Kenji Johjima and Jeremy Reed each had an RBI single, Ichiro Suzuki drove in another run with a groundout and Willie Bloomquist and Bryan LaHair had run-scoring hits before Adrian Beltre flied out to end the game.

The seven hits by Seattle were its most in an inning all season.

Washburn (5-10) was long gone by then, charged with six runs and nine hits over 4 2-3 ugly innings in his first start since Thursday's non-waiver trade deadline.

The New York Yankees reportedly pursued the left-hander before the deadline but the two sides were unable to work out a deal. Teams can still make trades but the players involved must pass through waivers first, which limits availability.

"I would be surprised, but I wouldn't rule it out, I guess," Washburn said. "They were intent on getting good prospects for me. I'm not sure good prospects would get through the waiver wire right now. We'll see what happens."

Baltimore pushed across eight runs in the fifth against Washburn and Roy Corcoran. Jay Payton hit a three-run triple and Adam Jones, who was traded from Seattle to Baltimore in the Erik Bedard deal, delivered a two-run single.

It was the Orioles' highest-scoring inning since they plated nine runs in the seventh on July 22, 2006, at Tampa Bay.

Nick Markakis had an RBI double in the first and Kevin Millar singled in a run in the eighth for Baltimore.

Notes: Jose Lopez had two hits for Seattle, extending his hitting streak to a career-high 19 games. ... The Mariners honored Suzuki on the field before the game for his 3,000th professional hit, which he got Tuesday at Texas. Team CEO Howard Lincoln and interim GM Lee Pelekoudas presented the perennial All-Star with a plaque as well as the base he stole in May to break Seattle's team record of 290 swipes, previously held by Julio Cruz. ... Baltimore sent LHP Brian Burres to Triple-A Norfolk and activated INF Alex Cintron from the 15-day DL. Burres was demoted from the rotation this week. ... The Mariners still have no idea when Bedard will start again. He has six wins in 15 starts, plus a balky shoulder.
