PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Aaron Cook's final line didn't look all that impressive, but the Colorado Rockies' opening day starter got just what he wanted out of his next-to-last spring training start.

Cook pitched into the sixth inning, throwing exactly 100 pitches and giving up three runs as the Rockies beat the Seattle Mariners 8-3 on Friday afternoon.

With his sinker staying too flat for his liking, Cook relied more on his slider and was able to wiggle out of the few jams he faced. It was the kind of challenge he wanted before the season opener arrives April 6 against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

"I would have liked to get another inning out of 100 pitches, but I didn't have my best stuff working today. I just kind of battled through it," Cook said. "They had a really good lineup out there, and I think they had a really good game plan because they hit my sinker really well. They hit some pretty good pitches."

Cook pitched 5 2-3 innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs. He struck out two and walked only one.

"It was one of those starts more toward the middle of your season where your struggling a little bit and battle through it," he said.

While Cook was able to work out of a couple tough situations and get deep into the game without over-inflating his pitch count, the opposite was true of Seattle starter Erik Bedard.

The Mariners' lefty made just his third appearance since missing time with a sore buttocks muscle. But instead of building on his last effort when Bedard threw 2 2-3 shutout innings, he struggled to barely last three innings.

Bedard was tagged for six runs and walked four in three innings of work. He allowed a first inning grand slam to Christian Colonel, who jumped on a first-pitch fastball at belt level and lined it over the left-field wall.

Afterward, Bedard said despite the troubles locating his pitches, he felt the best he had the entire spring.

"Sometimes you feel bad and throw good and sometimes you feel good and throw bad," Bedard said. "As long as I threw my pitch limit, it's fine. Just trying to build up my arm strength for the season."

It certainly wasn't the quality outing Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu was hoping for from Bedard. Most important, though, was getting Bedard's pitch count up trying to get the lefty ready for the regular season.

"There's getting your work in and getting your pitch count up, but there is also preparing to get better for the season," said Wakamatsu, who wasn't thrilled with the effort from Felix Hernandez a day earlier.

Seattle's Brandon Morrow also made his second outing since missing time with forearm stiffness. Morrow threw hard but also struggled to find the strike zone, walking three of the six batters he faced and giving up a two-run homer to Colorado's Ian Stewart.

Colonel has shown versatility by playing infield and outfield positions and having some pop in his bat. He needed only two pitches to drive in five runs, ripping his second homer of the spring off Bedard in the first, then hitting a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the third.

It was Colonel's 23rd game in spring training for the Rockies, second most on the club.

"I hope they like me, but with all the injuries and all the big guys (out) I have to fill in wherever they put me and I'm going to try and do a good job," Colonel said. "I don't know where that puts me in the big picture of things."

Notes: Colorado RHP Manuel Corpas got his turn in the Rockies competition for the closer position with RHP Huston Street. Corpas fared well, allowing only a two-out single. ... Despite the struggles of Bedard and Morrow, RHP Jesus Delgado, RHP Shawn Kelley and LHP Garrett Olson combined for five shutout innings of relief. The trio allowed two hits and struck out three. ... RHP Carlos Silva makes his second spring training start for Seattle on Saturday against the Los Angeles Angles, but his first start since returning from the World Baseball Classic.
