Same old story for Jarrod Washburn, Seattle Mariners in fourth straight loss

Same old story for Jarrod Washburn, Seattle Mariners in fourth straight loss
May 7, 2009 (The Seattle Times delivered by Newstex ) --

Yes, that is indeed Willie Bloomquist up on the big screen scoreboard at Kauffman Stadium. He did some damage to his former club today, scoring the only earned run allowed by Jarrod Washburn.

No need to do a bunch of analysis over this game. We told you yesterday that the offense is this team's most pressing concern. Far more so than the struggles of any one starter. And the recent slump hit the height of ridiculousness today. It hurt the Mariners even more because Ichiro played arguably his best game of the season, notching three hits, a walk in a key situation, stealing a base and making a great running catch in right.

But it was all for naught. In the end, Ichiro couldn't do it all himself. With the bases loaded and two out in the ninth, he grounded into a fielder's choice at second.

Four double-play grounders and some ill-timed strikeouts did the Mariners in. Sean White, who had been pitching fantastically up until today, gave up an eighth inning run his team couldn't afford and a 3-1 loss was at hand.

Washburn is getting used to this. He allowed one earned run over seven innings for the second straight outing and failed to come away with a victory. That's now 61 out of his last 123 starts in which Washburn's team has scored just two runs or fewer in support. Unbelievable.

You can't win with one run driven home in the ninth, as Mike Sweeney did. With a pop-gun offense. The Mariners are finding that out in a hurry. Four straight losses. The hits were there today, just not when they mattered. We warned you of this yesterday morning, how these two-game series, day games after night, have the habit of turning small slumps into big ones. The M's now have a real losing streak going and have to find a way to pull out of it.
