Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2008-11-29
It was 13 months ago that then-manager John McLaren and then-general manager Bill Bavasi brought in a veteran coaching staff that would, it was hoped, be just what an up-and-coming Mariners team needed.

The Mariners, however, proved to be down-and-falling. McLaren lost his job. Ultimately, so did his replacement, Jim Riggleman. Bavasi exited before both, and his interim replacement, Lee Pelekoudas, while remaining in the organization, didn't remain as the GM.

Now that pattern has trickled down to the coaching staff.

New manager Don Wakamatsu was given permission by new general manager Jack Zduriencik to bring in his own coaching staff, and so those most of those who hadn't already gotten new jobs -- third base coach Sam Perlozzo has joined the Phillies, first base coach Eddie Rodriguez has moved to the Royals, and Riggleman, the bench coach when all this started, is with the Nationals -- have been told they won't be coming back.

Also out: pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, bullpen coach Norm Charlton and bench coach Lee Elia.

The one holdover from last year who could be back on the staff is hitting coach Jose Castro, who was promoted from minor league duties after hitting coach Jeff Pentland was fired at midseason.

Wakamatsu has yet to make any coaching hires, although those will come soon. Some leading candidates: Dom Chiti, recently hired as a special assistant to the GM in Atlanta, who could become the pitching coach, and Ty Van Burkleo, for the last two years the hitting coach with the A's, who is likely to sign on as bench coach.
