Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2008-12-10
The coaching staff being put together by new Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu has many ties to the Angels organization.

Third-base coach Bruce Hines, bench coach Ty Van Burkleo and first-base coach Lee Tinsley -- as well as Wakamatsu himself -- have come up through the Angels' minor league system. The only exception is the new hitting coach, Alan Cockrell, the Colorado Rockies' hitting coach the last two seasons.

Wakamatsu said the reason the Angels are the best team in the American League West is the kind of sound, error-free baseball they play. And that's what he is trying to bring to Seattle.

Wakamatsu said he wanted his coaches to do their jobs to the point where Seattle puts a fundamentally sound team on the field every day next season.

"We want to be known for playing fundamental baseball," he said.

That makes the addition of Hines particularly important. The Mariners have a skilled infield, but one prone to making needless errors. Hines will be infield coach as well as third-base coach.

Wakamatsu said he likes Hines' versatility -- he coached in the majors with the Angels in 1991 and has managed, coached and been an instructor at the minor league level since then.

"The need with Bruce for me is can he get to (shortstop Yuniesky) Betancourt, (second baseman Jose) Lopez, and some of the Spanish guys," Wakamatsu said. "He fits a lot of different roles for us."

A hitting coach has yet to be named, but he should be in place by the end of the weekend.
