Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2009-09-07

Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2009-09-07This week will be all about right fielder Ichiro Suzuki with the Wild Card race little more than a mirage with 24 games to go.

Seattle is eight games out of the Wild Card lead, and the Mariners have three teams in front of them, so the final four weeks will have to be superheated indeed for Seattle to make it to the postseason.

Ichiro, who collected career hit No. 2,000 with a first-inning double Sunday in Oakland, heads into this week's series in Anaheim needing just five hits to get to 200 hits for the season.

It's become old hat for Ichiro to get 200 hits, but this one is special, because this will be the ninth consecutive year he's done it.

And that's significant because no one has ever done it nine years in a row. He is tied with Hall of Famer Wee Willie Keeler in having done it eight years running. Non-Hall of Fame all-time hits leader Pete Rose had 10 200-hit seasons, but they were spaced out over 15 years from 1965-1979.

A'S 5, MARINERS 2: RF Ichiro Suzuki doubled on the second pitch of the game for his 2,000th career hit and scored the run that gave Seattle a 1-0 lead, but the game went rapidly downhill for the Mariners from there.

RHP Doug Fister, pitching for the first time near home -- he comes from Merced, about 100 miles southeast of Oakland -- didn't make it as far as he would have wished because of a blister, and the Seattle bullpen couldn't hold the one-run lead he'd given them.

The blister developed in the third inning and Fister hung around for five innings, eventually leaving the game with a 2-1 lead, having given up only a solo homer to C Landon Powell in the fourth

RHP Shawn Kelley held the lead with a scoreless sixth inning, but he gave up a grand slam to Oakland DH Scott Hairston in the seventh, and that was enough to deny the Mariners for a second straight day in Oakland.

Kelley was pitching because the Mariners found themselves short in the bullpen with RHP Sean White having to fly back to Seattle on Sunday morning to have the pain in his right shoulder checked out.
