Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2009-04-25
Seattle manager Don Wakamatsu had a surprise waiting for him when he got on the team bus in Seattle Thursday night heading for Anaheim and the opening of Friday's three-game weekend series with the Angels.

Everybody on the bus -- players, coaches and staff -- was wearing a tie with a Mariner logo and Wakamatsu's picture on it.

The ties were the idea of Ken Griffey Jr., who had 40 of them made and then covertly distributed them in the wake of Seattle's 1-0 win over Tampa Bay.

"Everybody knows about these," Griffey said as he prepared to hand them out. "Everybody but one guy, that is."

The one guy was Wakamatsu, of course.

"I think they're pretty cool," Griffey said. "The idea is that when he (Wakamatsu) gets on the bus, everybody will have one on. Everybody but him."

Wakamatsu, not surprisingly, wanted one, too. And he got one. He said he's going to frame it.

MARINERS 8, ANGELS 3: 1B Russell Branyan, back in the lineup after five games off because of back pain, homered in his first at-bat and added an RBI double later in the game.

Those hits were part of a 17-hit attack that supported LHP Erik Bedard en route to his second win. Bedard threw 109 pitches over 6 2/3 innings, then turned the ball over to RHP Shawn Kelley, and the rookie closed the game out.

The Mariners have beaten the Angels three times in their first four meetings this year and the team that finished with 101 losses a year ago has a 4-1/2-game lead over the defending American League West champions.

Branyan's homer came in the second inning against RHP Shane Loux of the Angels. That was all the damage Seattle did until the fifth, when the Mariners came up with six hits and six runs to put the game away.
