Manager Don Wakamatsu's attempt to shake up the lineup hasn't gone nearly as well as he'd hoped.

Second baseman Jose Lopez, moved into the No. 3 spot in the batting order on Wednesday, has just one RBI in three games in his new role.

First baseman Russell Branyan, moved into the cleanup role last week and has some initial success, but he has just one hit in his last 12 at-bats and struck out three times Friday in the Metrodome.

Meanwhile, the players who were moved to make room for Lopez and Branyan aren't lighting up the night, either.

Third baseman Adrian Beltre, moved from cleanup to the fifth spot in the order, still has not hit a home run. And designated hitter Ken Griffey Jr., while he has two home runs, has just five RBIs for the season.

A game like Friday's 11-0 loss looks bad for the Seattle pitching. But as long as the Mariners aren't hitting -- the Mariners have two runs in the first three games of this road trip and four runs in the last 37 innings -- no pitching is going to be good enough.

TWINS 11, MARINERS 0: Seattle had never lost to Twins RHP Scott Baker and Baker had not won a game all season, winless in four decisions.

Even so, it should have come as no surprise that the Baker and the Twins rolled over the Mariners in this one.

Seattle simply is not hitting. Up and down the lineup, the hitters are struggle when there are men on base. And they are struggling to get on base.

Baker seemed to be the antidote to the Mariners need. He'd allowed 21 runs in 20 2/3 innings and was as down and out as a pitcher could get.

But on this night, he was the master of his realm, allowing five hits and no runs over the course of seven innings.

Meanwhile, Seattle rookie RHP Chris Jakubauskas gave up two runs in the first inning and allowed a three-run homer to SS Brendan Harris in the second, and the game was basically over.
