Bedard developed some hamstring tightness in his last start and is still feeling it, so manager Don Wakamatsu said Bedard is "a tentative scratch" for the second game of a Safeco Field series against the Red Sox.
Ryan Rowland-Smith and Carlos Silva already are on the disabled list, so the list of available substitutes is a little thin. The Mariners don't seem anxious to make a roster move, so Garrett Olson is likely to get Saturday's start with the hope that Bedard will only miss the one start.
The Mariners are starting Chris Jakubauskas (Friday) and Jason Vargas (Sunday), so that means Boston will see three starters who were not in the rotation to start the season. Two members of the rotation, Olson and Vargas, began the season in the minor leagues.
That, in turn, means that the bullpen is getting thin, because Jakubauskas, Olson and Vargas had been pitching in relief.
RANGERS 3, MARINERS 2: RHP Brandon Morrow's struggles continued Thursday, as he blew a save for the second consecutive day.
Morrow, who hadn't allowed a home run in his first nine games, took over with a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the ninth and gave up a solo homer to Texas DH Hank Blalock. It was Blalock who hit a two-run double in the 11th inning to beat Morrow on Wednesday.
After Morrow got one out, he was torched for a double by David Murphy, before Chris Davis homered to the right of dead center to run Texas' record against the Mariners this year to 5-0.
The Mariners finished their eight-game road trip with just one win. They are 1-9 in their last 10 games to fall three games under .500 for the first time this season.
