Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2008-08-27
Things are starting to stabilize in the Seattle rotation, but Miguel Batista, who was part of that stabilization with a six-inning, one-run effort against Minnesota on Monday, is heading back to the bullpen.

Batista gave the Mariners just what they needed Monday, but with the Mariners having a day off Thursday before starting a trip and with the rosters expanding on Sept. 1, Batista won't need to start again.

"The way the timing is happening, we have the off day and (Jarrod) Washburn will be pitching on an extra day's rest (in Cleveland)," manager Jim Riggleman said, knowing that he also will use Felix Hernandez and Carlos Silva (coming off the disabled list) to round out the Cleveland series.

After that, the rosters expand and Brandon Morrow enters the picture. Morrow, who was sent to Class AAA Tacoma to make a few starts and convert himself from a reliever to a starter, started Tuesday for the Rainiers and will make one more start this weekend.

After that, the Mariners will have to make room for him in the rotation.

"It will be the New York series (Sept. 5-7) for Brandon," Riggleman said.

All of which means Batista, who has fluctuated between the rotation and the bullpen most of the year, will be pitching in relief.

"It's just the nature of how things happen," Riggleman said. "The way he pitched for us (Monday) is a nice way to go into 2009."

MARINERS 3, TWINS 2: Seattle became the last American League team to reach the 50-win level when Jose Lopez broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the sixth inning and the Mariners held on.

Ryan Rowland-Smith pitched seven innings for the second consecutive start and handed the ball to Roy Corcoran in the eighth. Corcoran threw two shutout innings for his first big-league save.

Adrian Beltre, who had the game-winning, 11th-inning homer Monday, doubled to open the sixth inning and scored two batters later on Lopez's RBI single.

That rally came just moments after the Twins, needing the win to keep pace with the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central, scored twice off Rowland-Smith, one on DH Randy Ruiz's first career homer.
