Fields, who is represented by agent Scott Boras, wants a $2 million deal and the Mariners are, to this point at least, sticking with the slotted $1.5 million set by Major League Baseball for the 21st pick in the draft.

If the Mariners can come to an agreement soon, Fields likely would report to the instructional league. However, if there is no signing, there is an expectation that he would pitch somewhere in one of the independent leagues next year and resubmit himself for the draft in 2009.

MARINERS 6, INDIANS 4: Adrian Beltre homered twice, including hitting a two-run homer in a five-run fifth inning as the Mariners completed a sweep of the Cleveland Indians Sunday.

Beltre's big day helped the Mariners build up a 6-1 lead after five innings, but the Mariners didn't get a hit after his second homer, leaving it up to the bullpen to hold down the Indians, who had two runs in 6 1/3 innings against Ryan Rowland-Smith.

Cleveland loaded the bases in the seventh, eighth and ninth. The ninth inning was particularly harrowing for Seattle, because J.J. Putz, the closer, was getting the day off. Roy Corcoran came on instead and loaded the bases on walks with one out.

Corcoran survived when he tipped Ryan Garko's grounder toward shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who started a game-ending double play.
