Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2008-05-21

Seattle Mariners Inside Pitch 2008-05-21
Outfielder Jeremy Reed was surprised to be called up by the Mariners.

Reed was told Sunday he was being promoted, and he got into his first game since last September as an eighth-inning pinch hitter Tuesday in the Mariners' 12-8 loss to Detroit.

Reed went 1-for-2 with an RBI in his 2008 debut.

"It came out of the blue; there was no writing on the wall," Reed said.

Reed says he has gone back to the swing he had when he first came to Seattle in the 2004 trade that netted the White Sox right-hander Freddy Garcia.

Manager John McLaren said Reed would serve as a left-handed pinch hitter and as a backup outfielder.

TIGERS 12, MARINERS 8: Tuesday's game, pitting the teams with the two worst records in the American League, was no contest after the Tigers beat up on right-hander Carlos Silva for five runs in the fourth inning.

Seattle might have been hoping to see the same 1-7 Justin Verlander that the rest of the American League has seen this year, but it didn't happen. Verlander allowed just five baserunners, and the only run off him in six innings was a first-inning solo homer by Adrian Beltre.

The Mariners were able to heap on some runs late, including a two-run, ninth-inning single by Beltre, but the poor start by Silva and a two-inning struggle by right-hander Cha Seung Baek (six hits, four runs) meant the game was over long before the final out.
