Seattle Mariners Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30

Seattle Mariners Notes, Quotes 2008-12-30
--C Jamie Burke, who wasn't tendered a contract by the Mariners, signed a minor league deal with Seattle and will have a chance to make the big-league roster as the third catcher behind C Kenji Johjima and C Jeff Clement, two men who might frequently be in the lineup at the same time.

--RHP R.A. Dickey turned his back on the Mariners and signed with the Twins instead. He said he thought he had a better chance to make the roster in Minnesota, because new manager Don Wakamatsu and GM Jack Zduriencik couldn't say exactly how he was going to be used.

--RHP Josh Fields, the Mariners' first-round draft choice in 2008, hasn't signed with the club yet. That may change as the team gears up for spring training. Fields is asking for $2 million, and the Mariners are offering $1.5 million as a signing bonus. Seattle would get the 21st pick in the first round of the 2009 draft if they don't get Fields signed.

--OF/DH Ken Griffey Jr. remains a free agent, but the Mariners have expressed some interest in having him come back to Seattle. And Griffey, for his part, is exploring ways of returning to the place where he had most of his major league success.

--OF/INF Jerry Hairston Jr. is another free agent the Mariners are taking a long look at. The 32-year-old Hairston Jr. hit .326 in 80 games for Cincinnati last season.

BY THE NUMBERS: 38 -- Spots currently occupied on the Seattle 40-man roster.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Seattle could have been (for) more money. But the Twins felt like I could have a place on their roster right away." -- RHP R.A. Dickey, on leaving the Mariners as a free agent.
