Seattle Mariners Notes, Quotes 2009-01-18
--Woody Woodward, the Mariners' general manager from 1989 to 1999, rejoined the club. He will be a pro scout, focusing on spring training, the big leagues and the minor leagues.

--LHP Erik Bedard, RHP Aaron Heilman and RHP Felix Hernandez all filed for salary arbitration. Former GM Bill Bavasi never had an arbitration case actually go to a hearing, but it's not clear if new GM Jack Zduriencik is as anxious to avoid arbitration duels.

--3B Matt Tuiasosopo comes to spring training with a chance to make the roster for the first time. But the former third-round pick in 2004, while touring with the Mariners' annual winter caravan, says he knows he's competing only for a backup job. "We still have (Adrian) Beltre," Tuiasosopo said. "He's the best third baseman in the league. I expect to continue to grow as a player and take care of my business. I can only control the way I play, and everything else will take care of itself."

--RHP Josh Fields, the club's first-round pick in the June draft, is not signed yet, one of two MLB first-round picks still not signed. The Mariners remain hopeful that Fields will sign in time to make it to spring training. The two sides are only about $500,000 apart.

--RHP Carlos Silva, who struggled through a 4-15 season in his first year as a Mariner, has been on a weight-loss and conditioning program and is expected to report to spring training lighter than he was at the end of last season.

--RHP Denny Stark, who hasn't appeared in a big-league game in five years, was one of eight pitchers invited to spring training with the Mariners. Stark, the club's fourth-round pick in 1996, has undergone a pair of Tommy John-style ligament replacement surgeries but is healthy again. He was 6-3 with a 3.86 ERA in 2008 while splitting time between Double-A West Tennessee and Triple-A Tacoma.

BY THE NUMBERS: 17 -- The number of players offered invitations to the club's spring training camp.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "As of right now, we're still planning on having him start." -- Manager Don Wakamatsu on the future of RHP Brandon Morrow, a reliever-turned starter.
