--LHP Erik Bedard was scratched from his scheduled March 11 start due to tightness in his rear end. Manager Don Wakamatsu said Bedard could throw a bullpen session on March 14.
--RHP Brandon Morrow, slowed by tightness in his right forearm, struggled in a throwing session March 10. He will not make a scheduled March 13 start, and there was no timetable for his return. --LHP Ryan Feierabend is out for the season after having Tommy John ligament replacement surgery on his left elbow March 3. Although the physician, Dr. Lewis Yocum, said the surgery went well, the standard recovery time is 12-14 months.
--LHP Jarrod Washburn hit Oakland 1B Jason Giambi with pitches both time he faced him March 6. "It was a two-seamer that ran in," he said. "It ran in a little too much." Then Washburn laughed. "Jason and I are friends," he said. "But maybe he won't be as comfortable batting against me the rest of the year."
--3B Matt Tuiasosopo is the hot hitter in the early going for Seattle. With a double in one at-bat March 6 against Oakland, he's 8-for-15 as he bids to break camp as a big-leaguer for the first time.
--3B Adrian Beltre won't be playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic, even after Dominican 3B Alex Rodriguez had to pull out because of a hip surgery. The Mariners don't want Beltre playing in the WBC because of the surgeries (left thumb, left shoulder) he's coming back from.
BY THE NUMBERS: 11 -- The number of players the Mariners have playing in the World Baseball Classic. That's made it difficult to put the club's best lineup and best starting rotation together this spring.
