--RHP Chris Jakubauskas, who made his way to the Mariners after four years in the independent leagues, made his big-league debut in the sixth inning Wednesday. Jakubauskas, who was a major surprise in the Mariners' camp, retired the first five Twins and finished with two scoreless innings.

--RHP Jeff Zimmerman, who has not pitched in the major leagues since 2001, signed a minor league deal with the Mariners on Tuesday. The 36-year-old had a tryout last week "and we were impressed," GM Jack Zduriencik said. "The ball came out of his hand nice and easy. Our doctors have checked him out, and we've determined he's a guy worth taking a chance on." Zimmerman closed for the Rangers in 2001, recording saves in 28 of 31 chances before twice needing Tommy John surgery. He retired before the 2003 season. His brother, Jordan, was the Mariners' 32nd-round draft pick back in 1994 and pitched in eight big-league games with Seattle.

--Manager Don Wakamatsu and general manager Jack Zduriencik got celebratory showers from their players after Monday's win. It was the first win at this level for Wakamatsu and Zduriencik.
