Seattle Mariners Notes, Quotes 2008-07-31
--RHP Miguel Batista, who has been battling back problems for parts of the last two months, threw six innings in Texas. It was the first time he'd gone as many as six innings since a seven-inning stint against Boston back on May 27.

--SS Willie Bloomquist got one of his infrequent starts at shortstop and turned in the play of the game, a relay throw from LF Raul Ibanez that Bloomquist gunned to the plate so that C Kenji Johjima could cut down potential tying runner C Jarrod Saltalamacchia at the plate in the fifth inning.

--3B Adrian Beltre is scheduled to get a rare day off Thursday in the series finale in Texas. Beltre has played in 104 of the Mariners' first 107 games so far. He is 6-for-26 on the road trip so far and manager Jim Riggleman said he thinks his third baseman would benefit with a day off.

--C Jeff Clement, out for the last week with a thumb injury, could start Friday in Seattle against the Orioles. If his split right fingernail doesn't allow him to catch, he might serve as the DH. "I don't want him to go too long without getting at-bats," manager Jim Riggleman said.

--2B Jose Lopez's RBI single in the fifth inning stretched his career-best hitting streak to 17 games. In addition to that being the Mariners' best this year, it's the top active streak in the big leagues. During the streak, Lopez is averaging .329 to bring his overall average up to .305, and the 17 games have seen him produce five doubles, three homers, 15 RBIs and 10 runs scored.

--C Kenji Johjima said he didn't have a good grip on the ball he threw into center field in the sixth inning that led to the Rangers scoring the run that tied the game at 3-3. "It's not an excuse," Johjima said of the throw that cleared second base by about 15 feet. "I should have made a better throw. The next time I will keep the ball down."

BY THE NUMBERS: 7 -- Games in the Mariners' losing streak that ended July 27, matching the club's longest slide of the season.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "It felt (good) to get one hit, then get two. After that, I was looking for my third." -- C Kenji Johjima after getting two hits July 25. He'd had just two hits in 38 July at-bats before that.
