--RHP Felix Hernandez twisted his right ankle while fielding a foul groundball in the second inning, but that didn't prevent him from throwing eight innings for the win, the second opening-day win of his career. Manager Don Wakamatsu said Hernandez's ankle was a little tender, but the Mariners don't expect him to miss any time. Hernandez retired the last 10 batters he faced.
--OF Ken Griffey Jr. made the opening-day roster with the Mariners 20 years after breaking in with them. Two of his teammates from the 1989 Mariners squad, LHP Randy Johnson and SS Omar Vizquel, also made opening-day rosters this year, Johnson with the Giants and Vizquel with the Rangers. The 1989 Mariners thus are the first team in big-league history to have three rookies in the same year still playing in the big leagues 20 years later. Only seven teams in the era of expansion baseball have had two such rookies.
--RF Ken Griffey Jr. homered for the eighth time in his 20 years in an opener Monday. Although he has spent the last nine years playing for the Reds and the White Sox, Griffey's opening-day homers all have come while he's been wearing a Mariner uniform. The eight homers tie him with Hall of Fame OF Frank Robinson for the most opening-night homers in major league history.
--LF Endy Chavez is the 22nd player to start a Mariners opener in left field in the last 33 seasons. Last year's left fielder, Raul Ibanez, started there four times, but 13 players have done it just once.
--RF Ichiro Suzuki, on the disabled list for the first time as a major leaguer, will have a blood test Wednesday morning. He's going to be tested to see if the current strategy for attacking his fatigue and ulcer troubles is helping him get better. Ichiro isn't with the team, but his No. 51 jersey was hanging in the dugout Monday night and will continue to do so until he rejoins the team and comes off the disabled list.

MEDICAL WATCH:
LHP Tyler Johnson (shoulder surgery) has been slow to recover. He's been throwing, but not in Cactus League games, at least not yet. As a result, he will start the season in the minors as he rebuilds his strength.
RHP Chad Cordero (torn labrum) signed with the team during the spring, but he won't start the season on the roster because he's not ready. He could be ready by May, however, and then would be a competitor for the closer's job.
RF Ichiro Suzuki (bleeding ulcer, excessive fatigue) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He is expected to miss just the minimum 15 days.
LHP Cesar Jimenez (biceps tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 29.
LHP Ryan Feierabend (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list March 16.
