Seattle Mariners Roster Report 2009-04-09
The Mariners were hurt -- or helped, depending on your point of view -- by the World Baseball Classic this spring, with 11 players off at the WBC. Only in the last week of camp did the pieces begin to come together so that new manager Don Wakamatsu and new GM Jack Zduriencik could assess what they had. Overall, the starting pitching looks good, the bullpen looks weak and the offense and defense seem improved. But all the pieces haven't been together long enough to make a rational call.

--3B Adrian Beltre is supposed to get a day off his feet Thursday and is scheduled to serve as the designated hitter. INF Ronny Cedeno is expected to play third base in Beltre's stead.

--INF Ronny Cedeno made the Seattle roster as the backup at shortstop, second base and third base. But his first start came Wednesday night in left field. He had played only four games in the outfield before this season. LF Endy Chavez, who started the first two nights in left, was moved to right field. That means the Mariners have used three different players to start in right with Ichiro Suzuki on the disabled list -- Ken Griffey Jr., Wladimir Balentien and Chavez.

--C Rob Johnson probably will get his first start of the season Thursday. It's a getaway day game in Minneapolis, and veteran C Kenji Johjima has started the first three games.

--RF Ichiro Suzuki had a blood test Wednesday morning, and the results left the Mariners encouraged that Ichiro would be able to come off the disabled list April 15. The test was administered to determine Ichiro's rate of recovery from fatigue and ulcer problems. He is scheduled to play in a simulated game Thursday in Peoria, Ariz. It's not known if he will join the team Friday in Oakland or wait and join the team for Tuesday's home opener against the Angels, but if things go well, he could get another simulated game Friday.

LHP Tyler Johnson (left shoulder surgery in May 2008) started the season in the minors. He is attempting to rebuild his strength.

RHP Chad Cordero (right shoulder surgery in July 2008) signed a minor league deal with the Mariners during the spring, and he wasn't ready for opening day. He could return in May, however, and then would be a competitor for the closer's job.

RF Ichiro Suzuki (bleeding ulcer, excessive fatigue) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 31. He hopes to miss just the minimum 15 days.

LHP Cesar Jimenez (biceps tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 29.

LHP Ryan Feierabend (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list March 16.
