Seattle Mariners Roster Report 2009-04-25
With RF Ichiro Suzuki back as the leadoff hitter, LF Endy Chavez, who had a huge first week atop the lineup, will be moved around or will sit on the bench as manager Don Wakamatsu tries to juggle his lineup to find playing time for Chavez, LF/DH Ken Griffey Jr. and DH Mike Sweeney.

PLAYER NEWS:

--1B Russell Branyan took batting practice before Friday's game at Anaheim, was cleared to play and was in the starting lineup. He missed five games with back pain that started when he slid at home plate. He slid at the plate again Friday, but said he was fine.

--C Rob Johnson has only made nine starts behind the plate, but he has caught a shutout in three of those. The Mariners only had four shutouts for the entire 2008 season. Johnson is getting regular work with C Kenji Johjima on the disabled list.

--C Kenji Johjima (tight right hamstring) traveled with the Mariners on this trip to Anaheim and Chicago and is eligible to come off the DL when the Mariners return home next Friday against Oakland. "Everything feels good," Johjima said before packing for the trip. Johjima had not been on the disabled list as a major league player. Now that he is there, he wants to get off the DL as quickly as possible and get back to catching games. "I'm very optimistic I'll be back soon," he said.

--RHP Brandon Morrow has run off six consecutive scoreless appearances after a rocky debut as the closer (2/3 innings, three walks, three earned runs) April 7. In the process, his ERA has dropped from 40.50 to 4.05. Five of the six appearances have resulted in saves, moving Morrow into a tie for the AL lead with Kansas City's Joakim Soria.

MEDICAL WATCH:

1B Mike Sweeney (back spasm) left the April 22 game, and he didn't play April 23. He returned on April 24.

INF Ronny Cedeno (strained right hamstring) was scratched from the lineup April 23-24. He is day-to-day.

1B Russell Branyan (sore back) left the April 17 game after sliding into home plate. He did not play April 18-23, and he is day-to-day.

C Kenji Johjima (strained right hamstring) went on the 15-day disabled list April 16. He might start running in late April.

LHP Ryan Rowland-Smith (left triceps tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 11. He is unlikely to return when he is first eligible.

LHP Cesar Jimenez (biceps tendinitis) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 29.

LHP Ryan Feierabend (Tommy John elbow surgery in March 2009) went on the 60-day disabled list March 16.

LHP Tyler Johnson (left shoulder surgery in May 2008) started the season in the minors. He will pitch in extended spring training in late April.

RHP Chad Cordero (right shoulder surgery in July 2008) signed a minor league deal with the Mariners during the spring, and he wasn't ready for opening day. He will pitch in extended spring training in late April.
